On the Valentines Day 2023, Cape Agulhas residents (and lucky travellers from all around the world) were treated to a rare and heartwarming scene at the Struisbaai Harbour fishing pier. A Cape Clawless Otter and Short-tail Stingray were sighted swimming together while searching for food in the shallow harbour waters.
The video (taken shortly before sunset) is one of the many stunning encounters visitors to Struisbaai and Cape Agulhas can witness in the abundant and rich waters where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet.

Filmed by amateur wildlife photographer, Helen Finwick, the footage captures the incredible interaction between a Cape Clawless Otter and Short-Tail Stingray (one of Struisbaai Harbour’s resident stingrays) swimming together in search of fish scraps left behind by local fisherman or thrown into the water by excited onlookers standing on the harbour pier.
